Asics Gel-Kayano 17 Review

Although the Asics Gel-Kayano 17 recently underwent a trim down, the shoes continue to be highly rated by fans of Asics. This shoe is designed to provide stability for runners with moderate overpronation. When you have this problem, not only do you wear your shoes out in an odd manner but you need the added support to ensure your foot is carrying your weight correctly to avoid injury. The Asics Gel-Kayano 17 has that support built in but without the extra padding that is typical of shoes designed for overpronators.

Features of the Asics Gel-Kayano 17

The shoes have been upgraded from previous incarnations. For one thing, the Guidance Line technology now runs the entire length of the shoe. This helps to increase efficiency in your gait and ensure a comfortable ride. As mentioned before, the shoes have dropped some weight coming in at about 12 oz per shoe. Lighter shoes typically mean less drag so look for an additional few seconds on your time.

Most of the shoe’s weight sits at the heel which is the focus of extensive shoe technology. Since this is a high wear area, there is a built in heel plug which promote durability. Comfort is achieved through the use of Solyte material which is also used in the forefoot. Memory foam is used in the collar which molds to the heel providing stability and the entire heel design is made to work with the IGS (Impact Guidance System). This system works with your natural gait to provide maximum comfort and stability from the moment your heel hits the ground to the toe-off. The shock from impact is mitigated by a Rearfoot & Forefoot Gel® cushioning systems which work together to allow for a more fluid gait.

If you don’t wear socks while running, this is where the Asics Gel-Kayano 17 shines the most. The lacing is asymmetrical so that it follows the natural form of the foot. This reduces irritation and discomfort while running. Additionally, proper lacing makes the shoe to wrap the foot firmly keeping it in place so you don’t have that annoying heel slippage that is common with low quality running shoes. The tongue of the shoe is thick which keeps the top of your feet happy and the ComfortDry sockliner kills bacteria to keep them cool and healthy.

Feedback about the Asics Gel-Kayano 17

The shoes may fit a little narrower than previous incarnation of the Kayano. This may have to do with Asics commitment to making the shoe as lightweight as possible. However, the tight fit is mostly seen in the heel and midsole. There is still plenty of room in the toe box to keep toes happy. There were also reports that the sizing is different as well so you will want to try on different sizes to make sure they fit properly.

The main complaint comes from first usage. The shoes do require a little bit of a break in which means you may experience some discomfort during your first few runs. However, after logging in around 100 miles, you should be okay.

Asics Gel-Kayano 17 continues to be a crowd pleaser with high ratings from fans of Asics. Also new in this incarnation are different color schemes. In addition to black, you can also purchase these shoes with Lime, Gold, and Navy coloring for men and Turquoise, Magenta, Lime, and Onyx colors for women.
