The running world is currently going through a minimalist running phase. Fans of minimalism are running with the thinnest, lightest shoes they can find with some ditching footwear altogether to run barefoot. The thinking behind this is that running barefoot can actually strengthen feet and legs and that traditional running shoes do more harm than good. With the Asics Gel-Blur33, Asics is looking to appeal to minimalist runners with a shoe that promotes the natural movement of the foot.
The collection is fairly new. The number 33 stands for the number of joints found in the foot that allow it to move efficiently. The Asics Gel-Blur33 is the first in the collection that attempts to promote natural foot movements while still providing the flexibility and comfort that Asics has become known for.
The shoe is lightweight, coming in at about 9.88oz for men and 7.85oz for women. The technology integrated into this shoes starts with the Rearfoot Gel Cushioning System which reduces impact shock and promotes a smooth transition. Additional cushioning is provided by the ComfortDry Sockliner which also promotes a cool healthy environment for the foot by wicking away moisture and killing the bacteria that causes odor.
The midsole is made of Solyte Midsole material which is lighter than the standard Asics EVA and SpEVA midsoles. The California Slip Lasting enhances stability and comfort while the Asics High Abrasion Rubber is placed strategically on the outsole to promote durability.
Perhaps the most useful feature of the Asics Gel-Blur33 is the built in reflective materials. If you tend to run during low light hours, you’ll appreciate how this simple feature keeps you safe on the road by alerting drivers and others on the road that you are there.
So far the shoe has received mainly positive reviews since it was released in April 2011. People are going crazy over how comfortable and lightweight the shoe is. One reviewer commented on how well ventilated the shoe seems to be which they found extremely beneficial on hot days. Even fans of previous Asics shoes are finding they really enjoy how this new brand feels.
The most common complaint about the Asics Gel-Blur33 comes from the minimalist community itself. People don’t feel that the shoes conform to the idealism of minimalism because of the support technology built into the shoe. However, they do acknowledge that this is a good shoe for people who may be transitioning from traditional running shoes to true minimalist running shoes like the Vibram FiveFingers.
Overall, if you are looking for a lightweight shoe that still provides support, then it would be worth investing in the new Asics Gel-Blur33 running shoes.
